Focus Sponsored Activities

Box Tops for Education
Box Tops for Education is an easy way for you to help FOCUS by doing things you do everyday. Through Box Tops you can earn cash for FOCUS by buying groceries, shopping online or making purchases with a credit card. Best of all, FOCUS receives cash to use on whatever we need most - up to $60,000 each year!There are two ways to participate:

  • Clip - The Original Box Tops for Education: Clip Box Tops for Education coupons from hundreds of General Mills products throughout the grocery store. Just look for the Box Tops coupon so you know it's a participating brand. Each Box Tops coupon is worth 10 cents when we redeem them - up to $20,000 per school year.

Choir
Fall choir for grades 1-6 and grades 7-12 is held one time per week for an eight week session beginning in September. Choir is a FOCUS sponsored activity so a portion of the dues helps offset the cost of the choir. Cost is $15.00 per student per session.

Directory
The directory provides a FOCUS membership listing, including names, addresses, email, phone numbers. Inclusion of your family in the directory is optional, but all FOCUS members will receive the directory as part of the FOCUS membership. Directory information is NOT to be circulated outside of our group. You must be a current member of FOCUS to be listed in the directory. We will use the application form to gather the necessary information for the directory.

Education Fair
This is an event for children to share the things that they have been learning and special projects they have been working on. There will be opportunities for displays in many educational topics.

Homeschool Talent Night
An evening for homeschool families to shine as they perform in music and drama. This event is held in the Spring.

HSLDA
The Home School Legal Defense Association serves its members by answering questions pertaining to homeschool laws. Should a member have need of legal counsel, HSLDA provides a lawyer at no additional cost to the member. Yearly registration is $115.00 or $95.00 if you are a member of NICHE. Monthly and quarterly options are available. FOCUS strongly urges all FOCUS member to join HSLDA.

Hy-Vee Receipts
Save your Hy-Vee receipts all year and turn them into cash for FOCUS. Bring your receipts to MNO. The last date to turn in Hy-Vee receipts is at the April MNO. We have had great success with this program - thanks to you!

Mom's Night Out (MNO)
Mothers can enjoy Mom's Night Out in the pleasing environment of Morningside Assembly of God fellowship hall located at 4310 Old Lakeport Road. Moms can bring nursing infants (0-12 months), but due to the goal of the night, the rest of the kiddos are asked to stay home. We will enjoy some prayer, relevant discussion times, and some munchies too! MNO is generally the last Tuesday of the month at 6:30pm.

NICHE
The Network of Iowa Christian Home Educators is a non-profit organization serving the needs of home educators in Iowa. The website provides information about homeschooling in Iowa, including the legally defined options and choices available to home educators. It also recommends lesson plan forms to submit to the local school district. Each June, the group sponsors a curriculum fair and conference in Des Moines. A one-year member is $35.00 and includes a one-year (10 issues) to The NICHE Newsletter. NICHE members are also eligible for a discounted membership to the Homeschool Legal Defense Association. Speech
Your 7-12 grade student will learn the elements of a speech as well as have ample opportunity to hone their skills by presenting various kinds of speeches throughout the eight week course. This class can be a good introduction to speech for your middle school student and can also serve as high school credit for your older student. Class size will be limited.

Track and Field Day
Join us for a fun day of foot races, hurdles, long jump, Bible drill, football throw and more for children ages 3 - high school. Dads, grandparents, and younger siblings are welcome to join the entire family for a day outdoor activities with lunch following. Held in May, this event is a great way to celebrate the end of the school year!

Writing Contest
A Focus-sponsored writing contest is held each year in conjunction with the Education Fair. Students are judged on their submission according to their grade level.

Community Sponsored Activities

Boy's Basketball Weekly Practices
Sioux CIty Warriors Boys Basketball Team: 7-12 grade competitive team that practices three times per week and plays area Christian schools, homeschool teams and tournaments. The goal of the coaching staff is to model Christ-like character and teach Godly principles through basketball. Season runs November through March.

Girl's Basketball Weekly Practices
Sioux CIty Warriors Girls Basketball Team: 7-12 grade competitive team that practices twice a week and plays area Christian schools, homeschool teams and tournaments. The goal of the coaching staff is to model Christ-like character and teach Godly principles through basketball. Season runs November through March.

Lending Library
The location of the library is available as a member of Focus.

PE Activities
Fall, winter and spring PE activities are planned for local homeschool children. Every Friday, beginning in September, a different PE activity will be planned. It will be from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Activities will include: games at Long Lines Family Recreation Center, bowling, ice skating, and games at local parks (weather permitting). Prices will be listed for each activity. All homeschoolers are welcome. Mothers (or fathers) must be in attendance with their children. E-mail announcements will be sent over the FOCUS loop weekly. Ideas for activities are always welcome.

Field Trips
These are scheduled throughout the year via the e-mail loop. If you think of a good idea for a field trip arrange it, announce it, and facilitate it.

Policies for Activities

  • FOCUS activities must be organized by a member of FOCUS. Activities are open to homeschooling families.
  • For activities with limited enrollment, FOCUS members will be given preference.
  • All leadership or supervising of children must be done by FOCUS members who are actively homeschooling.
  • All activities must be in keeping with the FOCUS Doctrinal Statement.
